Canal Barge Recovery

7/2009 - 8/2009

The 100-ton New York State Canal Barge HD-1 sank in the Erie Canal while anchored overnight adjacent to the Walnut Street bridge in the town of Palmyra, NY. The barge is a historic vessel that was still in operation at the time of the sinking.

OP-TECH responded to the initial sinking event to provide spill containment and remedial support to the NYS Canal staff as they attempted to raise the vessel. OP-TECH response boats maintained harbor boom, sorbent boom and instituted 24 hour monitoring throughout the recovery efforts. Once it was determined that the NYS Canal staff could not raise the vessel OP-TECH managed the recovery effort. Within a short period of time OP-TECH raised the vessel successfully and delivered it intact and afloat to the NYS Canal dry dock located in Lyons, NY.

OP-TECH provided vacuum trucks for the duration of the project to drain the vessel's fuel tanks and recover oils leaking from it, while OP-TECH response boats were used to maintain harbor and sorbent boom and skim the residual oils from within the containment area.
